The competition for the 2015 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering is now open.
The Goldwater Scholarship is awarded to current sophomores or juniors who have excellent academic records and demonstrated interest in and potential for careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. Students intending on pursuing the M.D. or D.V.M. (and other health-related) are not eligible to apply, although students interested in research-based combined degrees (MD/PhD; PhD/DVM) are eligible to apply.
Students selected as Goldwater Scholars receive up to $7,500 to cover eligible expenses, either for two years for those applying as sophomores, or one year for those applying as juniors.
NC State students have been very successful over the years in the Goldwater competition. Last year three of our nominees won the Goldwater Scholarship! Experience has shown that successful candidates are those with very high GPAs (3.8 and up is recommended) and, most importantly, extensive undergraduate research experience.
NC State may nominate up to four students for the national competition. Therefore, we must hold a campus competition to identify the students who will receive the NC State nomination. This means there is a campus application deadline that is far in advance of the national deadline, to allow time for the campus consideration and then sufficient time for the successful nominees to hone their final application.
The campus deadline is Wednesday, December 3, 2014. The campus committee will identify the nominees prior to the start of winter break. The nominees must submit their final application by the end of January.
The NC State Campus Faculty representative is Dr. Tiffany Kershner, Coordinator for Distinguished Scholarships and Fellowships (firstname.lastname@example.org)
Students interested in entering the campus competition should contact Dr. Kershner (email@example.com) for a campus application.
